Introductory Classes

New!

Just getting started at Kutandara Center? Most students start with a introductory workshop to try out our format, style of teaching and instruments, but some just dive in a start with an introductory class. We offer 12-week introductory classes both for kids (ages 6-12) and adult/teens. After approximately one year of introductory classes, students move into our 36-week school year program.

Kids start in either Twiza/Giraffe (ages 6-8) or Nzou/Elephant (ages 9-12) for their first year of marimba classes at Kutandara Center. Adults/teens start in an introductory class for their first year and then together as a class move to our 36-week school year structure. At this point, new members are rarely added and the class goes through a naming ceremony to receive its Shona class name.

Summer 2012 Class Preview

New!
Our 8-week summer schedule begins the week of June 3, 2012 and continues through the week of July 22, 2012. Join us on Saturday, June 23, 2012 to celebrate the summer session with  our 7th Annual Student Appreciation Picnic!

Summer 2012 Kamp Kutandara

This summer we are offering three sessions ~ each one a stand-alone week. Each week will be different, though, so mixing and matching is encouraged! Try one . . . or try all three!

Session 1: June 4-8, 2012 ~ Village Life
Session 2: June 11-15, 2012 ~ Tour of Zimbabwe: Victoria Falls & Great Zimbabwe
Session 3: June 18-22, 2012 ~ Harvest Time

Looking for something unique for your child to do this summer? Our enriching music and arts curriculum is that and more! When children study music and the arts, their reading, spelling, and math skills improve. It is true ~ and it is fun!

  • Established in 2000
  • Master instructors from Zimbabwe and the US
  • First Aid and CPR certified staff

This is summer camp with a twist! Kamp Kutandara is a unique cross cultural program that gives children an in-depth opportunity to explore a wide range of music and dance from Africa in a day camp setting. Kids play by ear and build their musical confidence on all levels. If your kids are already doing music, this is the perfect match. If your kids haven't yet had success with conventional music - you'll love this! No prior musical experience necessary.

  • Drumming and Dance
  • Songs and Games
  • Zimbabwean Marimba (Ages 6+)

Ages 4-5 • Monday-Friday • 9-11:30 am
Ages 6-12 • Monday-Friday • 9 am-1 pm

Children are placed in small groups according to age and experience. Multi-Kamp discounts available. Register online at www.kutandara.com or call (303) 443-2969.

Each day your child will take part in exciting classes. While most classes take place inside, some classes take place outside under a 20’ x 10’ shaded canopy. Snack takes place outside, as well, in a shaded, grassy area. Kampers and staff work together learning marimba, drumming, dances, games and songs.  Our teaching staff are professional musicians, artists and teachers from Zimbabwe, while our counseling staff are experienced and dedicated teens who once attended Kamp Kutandara themselves and now share their passion with young Kampers. Our child to staff ratio does not exceed 6:1.

All kamp sessions are offered in one-week blocks and multiple sessions are offered each summer.  If you have not taken lessons with us at the Center, please make sure you add the Lifetime Membership to your order (Individual or Family). Click here for more information.
