Marimba Classes

Come make music with hands, voices, and marimbas! We explore a wide range of music from Africa and learn to sing and play songs together as a group. Children must have completed kindergarten or be 6 years old to participate. Marimba, as well as songs and games, are covered. This class is designed for children 6-8 years old who have had less than three (3) sessions at Kutandara Center.

It's finally time to focus on the marimbas! Students play around with songs from Zimbabwe and southern Africa on the marimbas, while learning key musical concepts. Classes often begin and end with children’s games and songs from Zimbabwe and West Africa. This class is designed for 9-12 year old students who have had less than three (3) sessions at Kutandara Center.

This class is designed for our 6-8 year old students who have had three (3) or more sessions at Kutandara Center. Children continue building skills and musical understanding through games, songs and playing the marimba as a group.

This class is designed for our 9-12 year old students for have had at least three (3) sessions at Kutandara Center. Children continue building skills and musical understanding through marimba songs ~ both old and new!

Shumba is a class in which students learn increasingly complex marimba arrangements and parts. Students begin learning performance skills such as stage presence, dancing and MCing. The focus shifts to refining and developing existing material rather than primarily learning new material. The class begins to feel like a band! The groups will sometimes work together (dancing, MCing, hosho) and sometimes work in separate studios one-on-one with an instructor (marimba). Your child will be assigned a group/instructor on the first day of class.

You can do this! Our introductory adult/teen classes are fun-filled and focuses on making music as a group. If you have tried a workshop, have more fun with a class! No prior musical experience necessary.
