Come make music with hands, voices, and marimbas! We explore a wide range of music from Africa and learn to sing and play songs together as a group. Children must have completed kindergarten or be 6 years old to participate. Marimba, as well as songs and games, are covered. This class is designed for children 6-9 years old who have had less than three (3) sessions at Kutandara Center.

This class is designed for our 6-8 year old students who have had three (3) or more sessions at Kutandara Center. Children continue building skills and musical understanding through games, songs and playing the marimba as a group.

This class is designed for our 9-12 year old students for have had at least three (3) sessions at Kutandara Center. Children continue building skills and musical understanding through marimba songs ~ both old and new!

Shumba is a class in which students learn increasingly complex marimba arrangements and parts. Students begin learning performance skills such as stage presence, dancing and MCing. The focus shifts to refining and developing existing material rather than primarily learning new material. The class begins to feel like a band! The groups will sometimes work together (dancing, MCing, hosho) and sometimes work in separate studios one-on-one with an instructor (marimba). Your child will be assigned a group/instructor on the first day of class.

Students who are motivated to move through our youth classes and also have an interest in performance can consider our auditioned youth performance program, which includes the groups Vana Vedu and Shamwari/Tamba!. Even if you have never played an instrument, you can do it, too! Our 1-1/2 hour introductory marimba workshops focus on giving students a “second chance” (or a first!) at music. No prior musical experience necessary.

These small classes focus on technique, strength-building, groove, click track work, fluidity and understanding different Zimbabwean marimba styles and how to play each well. If you would like to join an existing group or are interested in forming a new group, please contact us! Madziva Mana is an existing group.

Build foundational musical skills using voices, hands, feet and the West African djembe drum. Children explore rhythm and melody while marching, clapping, dancing, singing, drumming and role playing. Class will move at the pace of the older children, while the teacher engages younger children in basic concepts. Recommended ages: 4-9

Our drumming classes explore rhythms from Mali with master drummer Abdoul Doumbia. Proper hand technique, ensemble playing, djembe and dounou (djun djun) will be taught. This class is designed for beginning through intermediate players.

Our drumming classes explore rhythms from Mali with master drummer Abdoul Doumbia. Proper hand technique, ensemble playing, djembe and dounou (djun djun) will be taught.

Students can join this class at any time. Class will be pro-rated in the office for late starts.

Drop-ins are also welcome at $30 per class, payable on site.
