Music from Zimbabwe has thrived in our communities. Let's take the seeds planted in the music here and return the blossoms to their home in Zimbabwe.
Poverty and disease runs rampant in Zimbabwe. Many Zimbabweans, including our teachers, have been deeply and tragically impacted by recent situations. Unfortunately, government and private programs cannot provide necessary support and relief to reach everyone.
There are nine marimba bands and over 200 enthusiasts of Zimbabwean music and culture in the Boulder area. Kutandara Center directs five of these ensembles and teaches more than a dozen marimba classes each week to both children and adults.
There are hundreds more marimba bands and thousands more enthusiasts in the US, Canada and worldwide.
Randy McIntosh, Kutandara Center Music Director, and Amy Stewart, Kutandara Center Program Director, traveled to Zimbabwe during the winter of 2001/2002. They stayed in villages and homes of master musicians and learned much about traditional music, culture and rural life. They also provided medical and food relief to villages and individuals during their stay. It was an enriching and life-changing experience.
Today, we continue this exchange by planning more relief and cultural exchanges with rural Zimbabweans. While there, we provide relief to rural villages struck by the devastations of poverty, disease and drought, while studying with master musicians and exchanging stories of our cultures.
The Boulder Rugare Peace Project takes place in rural villages and households in need of our help. Each portion of the Boulder Rugare Peace Project comes with an inspirational and heart-wrenching story about the individuals and villages who need our support.
Some of the community service projects in which we assist include:
- Village Food and Medical Relief
- Urban AIDS Orphan Support
- Instrument Building and Repair
- Rural Electricity Projects
- Construction Projects
