In our classes, you become part of a group whose success depends upon teamwork and cooperation. Discovering the advantages of working with others and contributing to the overall success of the group is a valuable lesson that we can all learn again and again. Most importantly, you will contribute to the success of the group, learning a greater appreciation for the part others can play in their own successes, and vice versa. Group Learning Supportive Learning Environment We believe that rhythm and music are an inherent part of human nature and that each of us has an ability to uncover this nature. We believe that you have musical ability and are a musical person. We are committed to giving you an opportunity to experience music and its many uplifting, joyous and healing qualities – no matter your age or previous experience. When you are involved with music at Kutandara Center, your creativity expands and your self-confidence strengthens. You are able to see a larger picture of our world and bring a stronger sense of yourselves into relationship with other people. You are able to learn through wider use of your senses and intuition. Our group classes support this process and your journey to discovering (or rediscovering!) music in yourself! Memory Building Audio and Video Taping We have found that students who listen to songs and parts on which their class is working outside of class generally have an easier time learning and remembering parts in class. We allow both video and audio taping during class sessions. Some students audio tape each class and then put the tape in the tape deck of their car. We encourage you to find your own way of remembering what we have done in class each week, and we can talk with you individually about a strategy that works best for you. Although we will teach parts and arrangements as many times as a class requires, students generally have a more fulfilling experience in the class if they sense that there is a forward momentum to each session and to their own learning. We have CDs available that contain many of the songs that Kutandara Center classes are learning. Ask which listening CD might be right for the material on which you are working. Notating Parts In classes taught at Kutandara Center, we do not teach from sheet music, nor do we encourage students to notate parts and read from them in class. We do encourage students to stretch their listening ear and explore learning aurally (with your ears!) as is the tradition of African cultures. As a tool used to jog one’s memory, some students have found it useful to write notes to themselves about their parts and review them outside of class. For students who are interested, instructors show a variety of ways of notating parts that reflect both the pitch and the rhythm of the music and are appropriate to the learning style of the class.
